Spotting the Signs Your Website Is Costing You Local Jobs

Quick Summary

A slow, outdated, or hard-to-use website quietly turns away enquiries every week. Look for warning signs like poor mobile display, slow loading, and no clear way to contact you. If two or more apply, your site is likely costing you jobs right now.

Most service business owners don’t realise their website has a problem until someone tells them. I hear it a lot. Someone mentions they tried to call from their phone and gave up because the number was buried three clicks deep. That’s a lost job.

  • Your site looks squashed or hard to read on a phone screen
  • It takes more than a few seconds to load
  • There's no obvious phone number or enquiry form near the top
  • It hasn't been touched since you first had it built
  • You can't remember the last time someone said they found you through it

Here’s a scenario I see often. A plumber gets a referral, the customer looks them up before calling. If the site loads slowly and looks dated, they ring a competitor instead. The plumber never knows it happened. Most lost enquiries are silent, and that’s the frustrating part.

Not sure if any of this applies to you? Open your site on your own phone right now and time how long it takes to load.

How Pricing Works for a WordPress Rebuild

Right, let's talk money. Everyone wants to know this bit first. Most web designers price a WordPress rebuild one of two ways: a flat project fee, or a day rate multiplied by how long the job takes. Neither is wrong. A flat fee usually means fewer surprises for you, since the scope gets agreed before anyone touches the site.

What moves the price up or down? It's rarely the WordPress software itself; that part's often free. It's everything wrapped around it.
  • How many pages you need and whether each one needs its own layout or writing
  • Whether you want a booking system, quote form, or online payments built in
  • How much content has to move over from the old site, and whether it needs rewriting along the way
  • Custom design work versus using a proven template as a starting point
  • Ongoing hosting, updates, and security. Some quotes include this, others treat it as a separate monthly cost.
That last point trips a lot of people up. A build with no ongoing plan can end up costing more over two years. Factor in a plumber's or accountant's time spent chasing someone to fix a broken contact form. Ask any provider straight: is hosting included? Who fixes it if it breaks? What happens after month one? If they can't answer clearly, that tells you something.

I've laid out how I approach pricing and what's included on my WordPress website design page, if you want the fuller picture before we talk.

A rebuild done properly takes real hours. Anyone quoting you in five minutes flat hasn't looked at your business yet.

When a Full WordPress Rebuild Isn't the Right Fix

Not every problem needs a rebuild. I say this even though rebuilds are a big part of what I do.

If your site loads fine, looks decent on a phone, and your enquiries have dried up, the issue might not be the website at all. It could be your Google Business Profile, or how you’re following up leads, or the copy not speaking to the right customer. A joiner near Matlock once told me his site was ‘broken’ because calls had slowed down. It turned out his listing had gone unverified for months. No amount of rebuilding fixes that.

The same goes for sites with one or two outdated pages, a stale phone number, or an old logo. That’s a job for a few edits, not a full rebuild. If you’ve had a site built in the last year or two on WordPress and it’s structurally sound, you probably need better copy or stronger calls to action, not new foundations.

So when do you need the full job? When the site’s slow, hard to update yourself, not built for mobile, or so old it’s held together with plugins nobody supports anymore. If you’re not sure which camp you’re in, that’s fair enough. Most business owners aren’t meant to know.

I’d rather tell you that you don’t need a rebuild than take on work that doesn’t move the needle for you. That’s not how I want to run this.

Building Your Site Through a Five-Step Process, From Matlock Trades to Peak District Tourism Businesses

A plumber in Matlock and a bed and breakfast near the Heights of Abraham need very different things from a website. I build both the same way, through five steps I call the Service Business Blueprint. It doesn’t change because your trade changes. What changes is what we fill each step with.

  • Understanding: I find out how you get customers now, what's working, and where enquiries drop off.
  • Strategising: I map out what the site needs to do (chase calls, bookings, or quote requests) and how it should read for your actual customers.
  • Building: Your WordPress Website Design gets built around that plan, not a template pulled off a shelf.
  • Perfecting: We test it, tighten the wording, and fix anything that's slowing enquiries down.
  • Empowering: You get ongoing support so the site keeps working after launch, not just on the day it goes live.

For a Matlock trade, step two often means building around jobs that come in fast, like a burst pipe or a broken boiler in winter. For a tourism business near the Peak District, it’s different. Visitor numbers spike through summer and around bank holidays. Most enquiries land in a tight window, so the site has to convert quickly when it matters and hold steady the rest of the year.

That’s the bit people miss when they compare quotes on price alone.

Wonder why some websites just sit there doing nothing? Usually it’s because step one got skipped. Nobody asked how the business gets work before building the site around a guess.

Protecting Your New Site After Launch

Launch day feels like the finish line. It isn't. WordPress runs on plugins and a core system that get updated constantly, sometimes weekly. Skip those updates and you're leaving a door unlocked.

I saw it happen to a Matlock tradesman's site last year. An old plugin got exploited and the homepage got replaced with spam links overnight. He didn't notice for two weeks. Google noticed straight away and dropped his rankings.

That's the bit nobody tells you when they hand over a finished website. A site with no ongoing care is a ticking clock, not a finished job.
  • WordPress Updates: Keeping the core software and plugins patched so known security holes get closed.
  • Website Security Monitoring: Watching for suspicious activity before it turns into a real problem.
  • Malware Removal: Cleaning things up fast if something does get through.
  • Website Backup Management: So there's always a clean version to restore if things go wrong.
  • Managed Website Hosting: On infrastructure built for WordPress, not a bargain shared server.
None of this is glamorous work. It's the boring stuff that stops a disaster. It's exactly why I offer Website Maintenance as an ongoing service rather than a one-off handover. I'd rather be the person you call when something looks off, not the person who built a site you're now managing alone.

If a web designer tells you the job's finished the day it launches, ask them who's watching it in six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Wordpress Website Design for businesses in Matlock.

  • How do I know if my website needs a full rebuild or just a few fixes?

You probably just need a few fixes if your site loads fine and looks decent on a phone, but enquiries have dropped off anyway. That often points to your Google Business Profile or your follow-up process, not the website itself. A full rebuild makes sense when the site is slow, hard to update yourself, or held together with old plugins nobody supports anymore. I’d rather tell you which camp you’re in than push a rebuild you don’t need.

  • How long does a WordPress website rebuild take?

A proper rebuild takes real hours, not a quick five-minute job. The time depends on how many pages you need, whether you want a booking or quote system built in, and how much old content needs rewriting rather than copying over. I go through five steps with every project, from understanding your business to testing and tightening the final site. If someone quotes you instantly without asking about your business first, that’s a warning sign.

  • Will my new website work properly on a phone?

Yes, that’s one of the first things I check and build for. A squashed, hard-to-read mobile site is one of the biggest silent job-killers I see, especially when a customer tries to call from their phone and the number is buried three clicks deep. Every rebuild I do is planned around how real customers browse and enquire on their phones, not just how it looks on a desktop screen in the office.

  • What happens after my new website goes live?

You get ongoing support so the site keeps working for you, not just on launch day. That’s the fifth step in my process, called Empowering. Hosting, updates, and security get handled so a broken contact form doesn’t sit unnoticed for weeks, costing you enquiries. Some quotes bundle this in, others treat it as separate. Ask any provider clearly who fixes problems after month one, and what that covers.

  • Do you build websites for tourism businesses near the Peak District as well as trades in Matlock?

Yes, and I build both using the same five-step process, just filled in differently. A Matlock trade usually needs a site geared around fast-moving jobs, like a burst pipe in winter. A bed and breakfast near the Heights of Abraham needs a site that converts quickly during tight visitor spikes over summer and bank holidays, then holds steady the rest of the year. The structure stays the same, but the strategy behind it changes with your customers.

  • Is hosting included when I get a WordPress website designed?

It depends on the provider, so always ask upfront. Some quotes include hosting, updates, and security as part of the project, others charge for it separately every month. Skipping an ongoing plan can end up costing more over a couple of years, especially once you factor in your own time spent chasing someone to fix a broken form. Ask directly whether hosting is included and who’s responsible if something breaks later.
